LESSON 1:

Activity 1. Train your ear (20 minutes)

This activity consists of using the free online website (also downloadable as an app for smart devices) “Lyricstraining”. With this tool, children will improve their listening skills by trying to understand their favorite English songs. The way this website works is pretty simple, the video clip of the song will start running and children will have to fill in the blank spaces with what they think the singer said on that song.It is important to highlight that this activity will also improve their typing skills, as a little bit of speed is required to end victorious in the game.

To run this activity we will first introduce them to the website. There is no account required to access and it is completely free. The selection of the songs is completely up to the teacher, however, it is highly recommendable that the songs are slow and that the difficulty mode is set in easy, otherwise the level of difficulty would be too high for them. Once we explained all of this, you just need them to search for the songs the teacher has chosen and play.

Materials Activity 1: An electronic device such as a computer or a tablet for each student and earphones for each student, the reason being having all computers with songs would disrupt the class.

Activity 2 “Where is it?”  (20 minutes)

This activity consists of learning with a tool called “Didactalia”. Children will learn geography while they understand the concepts in English. They will have to complete some geographical maps copying the following links:

These maps work with an interactive system. Children just have to press some cards where there will be some words related to the different regions, rivers or Autonomous Communities and associate them to different blanks of the main map. The teacher will divide the class in four or five groups, so the students will work all together to fulfill the diverse exercises. They can internalize the concepts by filling gaps of provinces, countries, rivers, geographical reliefs, regions...and much more. Moreover, they have to complete the different activities in a brief period of time, so they improve little by little their memorization skills.

Materials Activity 2: an electronic device such as a computer or tablet.

LESSON 2 :

Activity 3: “Storyteller” (40 minutes)

The app Storybird is highly recommended for students to learn how to properly write in English by giving them the chance to create their own stories in English. Not only that, but also the stories they create could include figures or drawings to decorate the story. This will make their story writing process so much more amusing and interactive. Eventually, they could publish their stories on the Internet.

This activity consists of creating some stories while using this app. This exercise will be developed individually. Students will have to create a story about 10-30 lines with some drawings or illustrations, a story with just drawings or even a poem. Finally, they will share their creations with the rest of the class. So, the whole group will have to listen carefully and pay attention.

They will have to enter the website and click on the section “write”. Once they are there, they will be able to write a picture book, a longform story, a comic, a poem or a flash fiction. Depending on the teacher’s purpose, he/she can select to do just one or to let the children decide what to do. However, it is important to highlight that it requires an account to use it, although you could also make the children access the free 7-days trial.

Materials Activity 3: an electronic device such as a computer or tablet for each student in case of wanting to do this activity individually, although if preferred, it could also be done in groups (we recommend doing it individually so children have no conflicts when choosing what to do the story about). A pen and a sheet of paper to take notes is also advisable.

Activity 4: “How much do you know about art?” Daily Art (20 minutes)

This app is very interesting to work with the kids. It presents a different work of art every day that allows students to discover the diversity of this discipline. The work includes the author’s biography, anecdotes and a description of the piece itself while they learn these concepts in English in a funny way. This activity consists of creating some texts or resumes about an author or an artwork which could be considered the most interesting about the students. The teacher will divide the class into five groups. Each group will choose its favourite painting or author and will develop their own ideas in a drafting.

They tell each other how their week is going, what have been the most interesting things that they have been doing... Thus, they are able to communicate in English and the foreign student can correct the mistakes to learn better. We will contact some students of “Rose-Therèse Middle school” to develop this project. It will also be possible to share some letters if required by the students.

Each one will have to interpret a different movie. The movies will be the following: “The Christmas Chronicles 2”; “Peter Pan”; “Mary Poppins”; “The sound of music”; “Into the woods”; and “Christopher Robin”. The purpose of this activity is to highlight the differences language can make on scenes from different countries (changing the way a sentence is told… etc.) and to strengthen oral communication in English, as well as having to have a huge understanding of the language to come across with the correct translation.
